Do you want a solid base color or stain base color?
Choosing Your Base: Solid Base vs Stain Base
Both options are compatible with Kustom Grain and both will highlight the GrainFX effect. The difference comes down to how much natural wood you want to see and how custom you need the base color to be.
STAIN BASE
A stain base penetrates the wood and enhances its natural character. It allows more of the wood’s variation, knots, and undertones to show through.
Best for:
• Customers who want visible wood clarity
• Natural or semi-transparent looks
• Projects where the wood itself is part of the design
Process:
• Sand
• Wire brush
• Apply stain
• Seal coat
• Apply GrainFX
• Sand
• Seal coat
• Sand
• Finish coat
What to expect:
More depth and transparency. You’ll see more of the natural wood beneath the color.
SOLID BASE
A solid base is a tinted paint system. It provides full color coverage and reduces how much of the natural wood shows through.
Best for:
• Customers who want a more uniform base color
• Bolder or highly specific custom colors
• Situations where a stain formula cannot achieve the desired tone
Process:
• Sand
• Wire brush
• Apply solid color
• Apply GrainFX
• Sand
• Seal coat
• Sand
• Finish coat
What to expect:
More color control and more concealment of the natural wood. The wire brushing still allows the GrainFX pattern to show clearly.
Important to Know
• Both options require wire brushing.
• Both options will show the GrainFX effect.
• The choice is mainly about transparency vs coverage and color flexibility.
